Abstract:

Abstract: Guidelines for teachers and parents of emotionally-disturbed preschoolers are presented, with the goal of mainstreaming these children in Head Start Programs with non-handicapped youngsters. Learning activities, teaching techniques and classroom experiences are suggested that help children with emotional disturbances perform well with normal children. These children may exhibit behavior that is withdrawn, anxious, aggressive, hyperactive or psychotic; these behaviors adversely affect learning. Parents and teachers should work as partners in helping the child overcome his learning disability. The parent is encouraged to seek outside help, and available sources are discussed. Screening and diagnosis of emotional disturbance, and the normal development of the preschool child are reviewed in an appendix.
