Dickens, Charles, 1812-1870.
London : Chapman and Hall, 1845
|Alle auteurs / medewerkers:||
Charles Dickens; Richard Doyle; John Leech; Daniel Maclise; Clarkson Stanfield
|Opmerkingen:||Although the t.p. is postdated 1845, The chimes was published on December 16, 1844. Cf. Smith, W.E. Charles Dickens in the original cloth, v. II, p. 36.
The added engraved t.p. is one of the two leaves of plates and is known to exist in two states: in the first state "Chapman & Hall" is centered and slightly curved in cloud at foot of the engraved plate; in the second state, "Chapman & Hall" is at the foot of the page in open letters below the names of the artist and engraver. Cf. Smith, II, p. 35.
Other variations in copies which result from the use of different stereotype plates include: the presence or absence of a colon and/or commas in the printer's imprint on t.p. verso (p. at front); the number of leaders [i.e. periods] may be either 3 or 4 between the third title and its engraver on the "Illustrations" page (p. at front); page 39 may or may not have a page number. Cf. Smith, II, p. 35-36.
The illustrations were designed by Daniel Maclise, Richard Doyle, John Leech and Clarkson Stanfield.
