Abstract:

"Although trained as a chemist at Nanking, and having served as governor of his native district of Kiu-Kiang, Chiang Yee came to the discovery that painting was his true interest. Upon settling in England a score of years ago, Mr. Chiang began writing and illustrating books on Chinese painting, calligraphy, and family life for western audiences. Meanwhile he was absorbing the essential qualities of his new surroundings, analysing them and comparing similarities and differences, and recalling the Chinese poems of his youth. To record his observations on places, people and arts and letters, Mr. Chiang invested himself with the role of 'the Silent Traveller,' who drew and painted those scenes that had particular significance for him. His books on London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, New York, and Boston are more than a casual record of places visited. As Sir Herbert Read observed, Chiang Yee 'is one of those rare foreigners who help us to understand ourselves. He writes simply and clearly about matters which are subtle and difficult to understand...and has greatly extended our knowledge not only of Chinese civilization but of art and civilization in general.'" -- from page 4 of cover.
