The Chinese Experience in 19th Century America is a refreshing reminder for all Chinese-Americans and for all American immigrants. Roberta Gumport and Marcella Smith produced an articulate and wonderfully written manual that serves as a good foundation for junior high school teachers of American history and culture. The book contains many useful and practical didactic guidelines and directions. I particularly love the sections on "Teacher Background." Gumport and Smith are divine weavers of wisdom and knowledge.
I came to America from Hong Kong in 1971. I lived through traumas and extreme anguish on my journey to become a U.S. citizen. Instead of feeling demoralized, the book re-affirms my feeling that adversity is sometimes the best teacher in disguise. I highly recommend this book to all immigrants, not just those from China.
