Abstract:
[Christy] Christy Huddleston leaves home to teach school in the Smokies and comes to care for the mountain people, with their pride and poverty. She breaks through walls of fear and generations of darkness to bring them into the 20th century.
[Christy the sweetest gift] Because rain has ruined the fall crops, Miss Alice organizes a turkey shoot to bring food to the community without "charity," which the proud mountain people would never accept. A surprise visit from Christy's father turns tragic when he suffers a stroke, and Christy must decide whether to return home to care for him or stay among the people whom she has grown to love.
