Abstract:

During the two centuries described in Book Six, The Church in the Age of Humanism, Christians no longer faced the dangers of persecutions and barbarian invasions. But other challenges were very real. New and powerful rulers threatened the Church's independence, and commercial capitalism brought moral problems. Above all, the Church's inner life grew sluggish and sometimes corrupt and unable to foster the lofty ideals of Jesus. The call for reform was raised by Christians in many lands.
