Alan Taylor's excellent history of the little known (outside of Canada), War of 1812 is a perfect compliment to its bicentennial celebration. Mr. Taylor provides numerous, well-written little known vignetttes of the various people who were thrown into this confusing war. He quite rightly calls the War of 1812 a civil war, not only between the British, Canadians and Americans but also it was a civil war among Americans themselves, with the Republicans supporting the war and the Federalists opposing the war. Mr. Taylor exposes the numerous ironies, hypocrisies, and spin-doctoring of the war. For example, although the Americans fought the War of Independence in part due to taxation, the taxes in Upper Canada were much lower than the US at the time the War of 1812 was declared.
Mr. Taylor also describes a reverse ride of Paul Revere, in which an American commercial courier, James Vosburgh, bypassed the American Fort Niagara, crossed the Niagara river into Upper Canada and warned the British that the Americans were coming! This advance warning enabled the British an early advantage in the war.
There are many more well written and interesting facets to the war that the insightful Alan Taylor's laser vision illuminates. A good read and a good history!
