Abstract:

Twenty-nine letters (1878-1882) from Cass Gilbert to St. Paul (Minn.) architect Johnston discuss Gilbert's student life at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston (1879), his work in New York with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (1879), his study of architecture in England and France (1881), his work with the Baltimore (Maryland) architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White (1882), and his views on other architects and styles.

Included also are a letter from Gilbert's mother (1880), a letter from Johnston in Italy (1883), and a letter from a friend in Venice (1882); a volume of tracings and drawings of buildings and architectural details (ca. 1880); and a scrapbook (ca. 1896-1898) of pictures and articles on buildings, mainly in St. Paul, designed by Gilbert and Johnston, including the Minnesota Capitol.
