摘要:

For 50 years around 1800, Vienna was where Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert were composing -- a visitation of genius unrivalled in the history of music. This program shows the historical circumstances that made Vienna the musical capital of Europe and explains the musical leadership of Emperor Leopold. The program also explains the flourishing in Vienna of Italian opera and bel canto on the one hand and sacred music on the other, discusses the birth of both classical style and symphonic form and demonstrates the progression during the 18th century from stilted to natural, from Cesti's Il Pomo d'Oro to Gluck's Orfeo. The program contains sections from the works of Cesti, Froberger, Kerll, Fux, Caldara, Monn and Gluck.
