Abstract:

Cliff and Orea Haydon are interviewed by Margaret Van Cleve on September 1, 1993 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Cliff talks about coming to Alaska as a cook on fishing boats, making his way to Fairbanks from Valdez, jobs cooking and mining, and his position at the Ladd Field power plant. He speaks of Dale Gaffney, his friend and military comrade. He also talks about the establishment of Golden Valley Electric Association, Bob Huffman, and the flood of 1967. Orea, a third generation Alaskan, talks about her family--Aunt Blanche Cascaden who had a mine at Livengood, and her father Louis Johnston who was the projectionist at the Empress Theater. She tells of working at Saint Joseph's Hospital and Ladd Field. She and Cliff married after 1 month of courtship, and homesteaded on Badger Road. She gives an account of the 1967 flood, and her talents in gardening.
