The humdrum days of grouchy animals on a Texas farm are enlivened by Rooster's newfound jitterbugging passion, which soon has everyone bouncing and dancing.

In spite of lots of work to do, the animals are bored on a gloomy and dull farm in Texas. Then the rooster catches a jitterbug. The dance fever overtakes the farm so chickens lay no eggs and cows give no milk. As the day goes on, the barnyard sees a variety of dances: the tango, the cha-cha and ballet. This frenzied activity cannot last long and after the second day, the rooster only wants to sleep. His rest causes other barnyard activities to go awry until the rooster finally wakes up and sees the mess. He wonders if maybe a balance between work and dance can help the farm operate more smoothly. The rooster did not count on the farmer and his wife catching the jitterbug but he may have to resign himself to their distraction. With bright colors and cartoon-like animals, this rhyming story gently shows that too much of any activity may result in bad circumstances. The variety of dance steps and the playful rhymes make this perfect for a kindergarten read-aloud. First graders and some second graders can also enjoy the humor and verve. The fate of the farmer and his wife is not exactly necessary but the end papers explaining the dance help explain unfamiliar dance steps. Anyone who reads or hears this romp cannot help but be amused.
