Abstract:

The collection contains letters and other documents relating to George Washington and his contemporaries including two letters from Washington to his distant cousin, Lund Washington, concerning enemy movements on Long Island and business affairs at Mount Vernon during the revolutionary war. There are several letters from George Washington Parke Custis while living at Arlington House.

There is a letter, 1793, from Edmund Pendleton to David Stuart commenting on new political alignments in the Virginia General Assembly, and a letter, 1795, from Thomas Mifflin to a Pittsburgh judge regarding the western frontier and urging more reasonable treatment of the Indians.

Miscellaneous material includes George Washington's plans and drawings for a serpentine wall below the east lawn of the Mount Vernon mansion; a list of slaves taken from Mount Vernon by the British in 1781; papers relating to the family of Daniel Parke Custis, first husband of Martha Washington; and a few accounts, receipts, newspaper clippings, memoranda, military papers, and autographs.
