Abstract:

"This volume gathers together various essays about the world of rare books, especially Americana, which I have written over the last thirty years. The pieces address two distinct themes. The first group discusses collectors and booksellers of Americana books and manuscripts from the mid-19th century to recent times. The second series more broadly addresses the rare book market, mainly in the United States from World War II to the present day. To a large degree these topics are intertwined, and many of the individuals who figure in the first section of essays played a significant role in the shaping of the larger market, either as suppliers or consumers of books and manuscripts. A number of these essays were originally lectures or were published in other contexts, while others appear here for the first time."--Introduction, page vii.
