Abstract:

Hernia, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids are conditions that may ultimately be treated by surgery. Data on their prevalence and adverse effects will be used in the Rand Health Insurance Study (HIS) to investigate the effect of different levels of insurance on health status and quality of care for at least three reasons: their high prevalence, potentially serious complications, and responsiveness to treatment. This Summary gives, briefly, the definition of these conditions, their prevalence and effect on people's lives, HIS methods for measuring prevalence and disease impact, and main results from enrollment for these three conditions in turn. We include comments about quality-of care criteria, which are separate for each of the three conditions.
