Consists of a printed portfolio containing 7 leaves, each with a vignette and a brief calligraphed extract from a work by Channing, Emerson, Alcott, or Browning; and a single leaf containing an introduction by Albert E. Lownes, quoting two letters from May Alcott to Moncure Daniel Conway.
Title from portfolio cover; place of publication inferred from address of the secretary of the Thoreau Society, Walter Harding, who was responsible for production and distribution.
"These 'Concord scenes,' made by May Alcott for Moncure Daniel Conway in 1875, are here first reproduced .... We are indebted to Mr. Albert Edgar Lownes of Providence, Rhode Island, for permission to use these drawings, the originals of which are now in his personal library. Six hundred copies of this booklet have been printed for distribution to members of the Thoreau Society."
The original drawings, included with other materials in an album entitled "Concordia", are now housed in the John Hay Library, Brown University, as part of the Lownes Thoreau Collection. In correspondence with Walter Harding, Lownes expressed deep disappointment in the quality of the reproductions, which were made from photostats that he had provided. |
