Abstract:

Sets out, first, to grapple with the question of mythology as posed by Bultmann and his followers. The New Testament presents Jesus as a divine person, the Son of God. Must we not shatter this idol, some ask, in order to rediscover faith? This is the problem of Jesus' personality and the wya it reveals and communicates itself. To discuss these matters, we must necessarily pass through the consciousness of Jesus -- a dangerous undertaking, since the word is ambiguous and the reality infinitely difficult to pinpoint. And yet the event related in the Gospels has to have been truly lived by Jesus: it has to have been his conscious life and death. Such a demonstration seems feasible from a study of the Gospel texts which take into account the questions of exegesis and the values of spiritual experience. It underscores the profound coherence in the language of the Gospels and shows how God reveals himself in the countenance and the words of a man.
