Abstract:

This ambitious book attempts to get at the root of the problems in health care, with carefully considered analyses based on data from hospital administration and social science literature, the nonmedical press, unpublished sources, and interviews with leaders of national organizations and medical policy makers. The emphasis in on four areas the author identifies as the principal stumbling blocks in the current system: an inability to deliver comprehensive care; inefficiency in cost control; nonresponsive to needs of professionals and clients; psychological insensitivity to patient needs. Additionally, strategies adapted from international politics may be an effective method of addressing the widespread problem of interorganizational relations in the medical arena.
