by Dorina K Lazo Gilmore; Kristi Valiant Print book : Fiction : Primary school
Lumpia, Adobo, Pancit - oh my!    (2009-07-01)
It is nigh impossible to stay seated with this delightful picture book, when the text by wordsmith Dorina K. Lazlo Gilmore and the pictures from artist Kristi Valiant make a reader want to run to the kitchen & cook.
The baby of a family, a family which has heritage from The Phillipines, isn't allowed to tackle important tasks in the kitchen. Until one day....
CORA COOKS PANCIT is a gentle tale with themes of pride in ethnic heritage, love of family, the importance of helping each other & the excitement of tackling new things, running through it.
A glossary and a recipe add to the treat.
Favorite quotation from book: "She imagined Mama and Lolo cooking together. She saw Lolo as a boy unwrapping the banana leaves and scooping the sweet rice from inside."
Favorite illustration: Each of the cover images are so fetching, but I keep turning to the page where wee Cora stands on a chair at the head of the table, basking in praise, wearing a special item handed down in the family.
The author is originally from Chicago and comes from a Filipino-Italian family.
The illustrator grew up in Wisconsin & has lived a summer in China.
We expect to see many more wonderful picture books from each of them.
