When Coraline's family moves into a new flat, the little girl discovers fourteen doors – only thirteen of which open. When she manages to unlock the fourteenth door, she finds a flat exactly like hers – only with another mother and another father, with buttons for eyes, who want Coraline to stay with them and be their daughter forever.Gaiman, a master of atmosphere and mood, spins a tale that tightens its dreadful grip on readers with each passing chapter. The author skillfully employs light, dark, quiet and noise to create a chilling sense of isolation. Children and young adults will applaud brave Coraline’s actions and marvel at the author’s unique vision. However, Gaiman’s fable-like narrative, though effective in recalling spine-tingling childhood tales, does leave Coraline and the Other Mother somewhat obscured and unengaging. Still, this suspenseful novel is sure to make an impression – Gaiman’s powerful images, paired with McKean's eerie renditions, are likely to linger in the reader’s mind, and keep bedroom lights on well into the wee hours of the night. Recommended for grades 5 and up.
