Definitions of these specific skills can help update job qualifications, guarantee various financial support for the library and lend some authority to the technical abilities of the library’s staff. In a series of articles written by various authors, this collection attempts to examine what skills are needed and how a library's staff may acquire or maintain those skills. The case studies that are included show various sets of competencies and illustrate a variety of libraries: public, special, a community college and a research institution. The authors of the articles have worked as coordinators or managers of library technical staffs or they coordinate planning for a library's technical staff. The book's sponsor, Libraries and Information Technology Association (LITA), appears the strongest section of ALA that could make recommendations for libraries in specific competencies about a library staff's technology skills. Some of the collection's best articles come from the case studies. Kevin Herrara at the University of Mississippi illustrates how much education occurs while on the job as he began working in a library’s technical department without a library degree. As the technology changed and his job requirements increased, he decided to get his library degree. He provides a nice perspective by questioning the need for a library degree and answers with an ambiguous "maybe." Unfortunately none of the articles stresses an overall set of skills that could be considered “core competencies.” This omission may be due to the large array of technologies considered: web pages, server implementation, computer maintenance, an integrated library system and networking. Also the type of library and its staff can determine the number of competencies and how these are measured. However LITA seems the best division of the American Library Association to make such recommendations for libraries. If any of the author’s made a case for a specific set of skills, the book would have been stronger and more interesting to read. When one considers the rather high cost and the lack of any strong recommendations that could be used by supervisors or accrediting bodies, it makes it difficult to recommend this book very strongly.
