Abstract:

Consists of ca. 25 letters from Cheret to several correspondents, together with ca. 145 letters received, and some additional printed material.

Series I. Letters, 1878-1926: Most of the letters concern work in progress and are addressed to, among others, the critics Felicien Champsaur (1885-1887) and Armand Dayot (1888-1890), the German publisher Albert Langen (1895) and to the poet Marcel Schwob. Projects discussed include illustrations for the Revue de l'art decoratif and a cover for a book by Gustave Geffroy. The series includes a letter from Geffroy to Langen concerning the title of the book. Arranged in chronological order.

Series II. Letters received, 1889-1932 (1939): From fellow artists and literary figures including Albert Besnard, Gustave Geffroy, Leon Hennique, Gustave Kahn, Georges Lecomte, Camille Mauclair, Puvis de Chavannes, Charles Morice, J.E. Blanche, Claude Roger-Marx, Alfred Roll, Charles de Bussy and Henri Ibels. Of particular interest are letters from Mauclair about an article for the Revue de l'art decoratif (1902); several others from various governmental agencies regarding the Hotel de Ville commission (1896) and the Legion of Honor; and letters pertaining to the photographic reproduction of the Hotel de Ville murals for L'Artiste and La Vie illustree (1902-1903). Arranged in chronological order.

Series III. Documents and printed material, 1785-1939: Personal legal documents and printed materials, some pertaining to the Musee Cheret in Nice.
