Abstract:

This paper explores the problem of identifying issues related to the professional development of rehabilitation counselors. The report is based on selected data from a survey of a broad range of professional problems as perceived by rehabilitation counselors in a five state area. The one overriding concern noted was the need for innovation in the areas of research and development. Almost all the recommendations require the generation of new information, new administrative control techniques, and/or a new system for analysis and decision making. More than 50% of the rehabilitation counselors perceived a need for change. It was also found that the variable which seemed to discriminate best among the counselors in relation to their perceptions was their formal training. This finding suggests that there is an important need for research in aspects of the rehabilitation counselor's professional development. (KJ)
