Abstract:

"This is the story of the growth of one American city--of the processes involved and the factors of causation. In addition, it shows broad outlines of the current structure of the community. The historical facts of Fort Worth's development are not particularly different from those relating to the growth of other American cities. What may be different herein is the interpretation of the facts, and particularly the emphasis on local leadership and its influence on the growth of the community. From frontier settlement to cowtown and on to metropolis--in approximately one hundred years--is something of a transformation, even for Texas. It is particularly so since there was little logic for the community's existence, and even less for it to become a railroad center and the gateway to West Texas, or recently to become an industrial giant on the Texas horizon"--Preface.
