Abstract: "This paper discusses issues and experiences relevant to the selection of a new programming language for First Year Computer Science Students. A number of criteria are presented which may be relevant to measuring the suitability of such languages. Several wider policy issues which indirectly affect the decision are also addressed. A taxonomy and critical summary of the major candidates for a first language is provided."
