Abstract:

(Critical) This module, one in a series on the neurologically disabled patient, discusses four major problems of the acutely ill neurological patient: respiratory failure, aspiration, infections, and increased intra-cranial pressure. Preventive and therapeutic interventions are demonstrated including clapping, vibrating, and suctioning procedures. More emphasis is placed on techniques than on principles or the etiology of problems and clinical changes associated with the therapeutic interventions. A critical component in the technique of turning the quadriplegic patient was not observable. Charts illustrating the relationship of intracranial pressure and various factors were not explained. This clear, well-designed program is recommended with reservations for baccalaureate nursing students and staff nurses.
