Contents: Gerontion and his mate --
Did you hear the drums this morning --
Babble from communication towers --
Best dressed, dominant --
In this little town dedicated to books --
I have become obsessed --
He didn't think their careers should be jeopardised --
He is the feeble father --
December came --
He watches himself degenerate --
This season as usual --
Love for persons --
Golden thoughts, golden acts --
Small islands --
Others had gone off to grazing grounds --
Months fly like migratory swallows --
The coconut tree near the road --
Labara in his dream world --
Ladies and gentlemen --
When spring is there --
First there was the follower --
So a song lights up the heart --
He lost his mother's love --
Laden with karmic burdens --
Same address for four decades --
He grew up in the countryside --
The avant-garde artist --
The gentle poet --
They have fifty or sixty offspring --
Vibrations stir him --
It's no joke --
Two of his grandmothers --
A couple resembling Mannie Ramjohn --
In that period of night turning morning --
East --
region of mystery and beauty --
Faux cane-cutter in a red house --
Body parts of poems --
I want to sing songs for you --
One weekend sixteen finalists --
He doesn't have it in him --
Infatuation lags far behind --
There were masters old and new --
He told the girl next to him --
Was it the laureate frolicking --
Before he goes on stage --
Even as he stepped off the fabled urn --
Anansi slinked on the ceiling --
Who knows another's realities --
They spent the entire day knocking about --
Sugar down there.

Abstract:

"Anson Gonzalez's prose poems crisscross the crossroads between dream and conscious awareness. They set the reader on a surreal adventure into the mental journeys of a persona for whom the inner and outer worlds are a seamless universe. There is no order to the presentation of the prose poems; they take their own twists and turns. The poems are lyrical, tell stories and explore a lifetime of reflective concern with life's conundrums: love, ageing, finding an inner purpose, being Trinidadian - and sometimes feeling out of step with the temper of the times."--Jacket.
