Abstract:

Beginning with an appeal from the Emperor of Constantinople to Pope Urban II to assist in repelling the Turks from invading the city, the Crusades lasted almost 200 years and, in many ways, defined relations between Europe and the Islamic world even to the present. Stripped of its romance and chivalry, the campaigns reveal a dark history of bloody slaughter, intrigue and incompetence that left few heroes. Jones uses an array of techniques such as humour, creative anachronism, restaged battles, animated mosaics and computer graphics to bring that period of history to life.
