Author Sofie Kelly mixes librarians, cats, murder, and a hunky single detective in a new “Magical Cats Mystery” series set in the Lake Pepin area of Minnesota. Single newcomer Kathleen Paulson left Boston to lick her wounds after her longtime boyfriend quickly and unexpectedly married somebody else within two weeks of their first real serious disagreement. Her new job is to renovate and update the Mayville Heights’ Carnegie Library. The librarian finds small town gossip means no one has secrets, unless murder is involved. The shock that her two feral cats, Owen and Hercules, like Detective Gordon, is set aside, as she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of well-known composer and conductor Gregor Easton. It didn’t help that her cat Owen jumped on the conductor head when they first met in the library. Hercules appears to have magical powers and just happens to gather items that give Kathleen hints to who really murdered the conductor. There is nothing magical about the accidents at the library, or the murder and infidelity that will lead to a storybook ending, but it is a satisfying beginning to an interesting mystery series.
