Abstract:
This preliminary study of cuttering, a new research project through the OCLC Office of Research, defines cutter numbers, discusses their origin, reviews available methods of assigning cutter numbers and extensions, and identifies shelving problems that can arise due to dissimilarities in the cuttering process. In its conclusion, the paper identifies a research format for determining the feasibility of assigning cutter numbers algorithmically.
