Reference literature on education expanded with the introduction of mass schooling in the nineteenth century. The rapid growth of the teaching profession led to the production of instructional books, both for teacher training courses and for reference in the classroom. Kiddle and Schem's Cyclopaedia of Education was the first such book to appear in the United States. It offers a thorough survey of authoritative opinion and an accurate reflection of the topics foremost among educators of the time.
