Abstract:

Personal and official correspondence, sermons, memos, reports, minutes, newsclippings, articles, and pamphlets of Monsignor Daniel Cantwell. Materials primarily document Cantwell's work as a Catholic priest in Chicago from the 1940s onward, in the areas of race relations, fair housing practices, and working people's rights, including material about his role as co-founder and chaplain of activist Catholic lay groups such as Friendship House, Catholic Adult Education Center, Catholic Interracial Council, and Catholic Council on Working Life (originally Catholic Labor Alliance); the position of the Roman Catholic Church on social issues; and the work of Catholic clergy and lay people in the social arena. Organizations represented include Housing Conference of Chicago, National Conference on Religion and Race, and Chicago Conference on Religion and Race. Correspondents include personal friends and acquaintances; lay and clerical colleagues in social action work, including Msgr. George C. Higgins of National Catholic Welfare Conference; individual commentary on Cantwell's position on such social issues as integration and open housing; and officials of the Archdiocese of Chicago, among them cardinals John Cody, Albert Meyer, and Samuel Stritch.

Includes "A Chicago Declaration of Christian Concern," of which Cantwell was a signer.
