Abstract:

Don's party: Williamson's satire of university educated upwardly mobile (in the main) ALP supporters is set in a suburb on Sydney's North Shore on the night of the 1969 Federal Election (in the play it was set in an outer suburb of Melbourne). The satire achieves its bite through a sense of what passes for naturalism. The essential ockerism of the males becomes more apparent as the party degenerates and the alcohol takes over. The critical focus sharpens and the humour becomes more cynical.

The removalists: A police constable and a seasoned sergeant are drawn into a domestic dispute when they assist a battered wife in the removal of furniture from her belligerent husband's flat.

Travelling north: A crotchety old man and his much younger companion travel to Queensland to enjoy their retirement but paradise fails to hide some dark secrets.

The four minute mile: The true story of John Landy, Roger Bannister and the race of the century. It was the sporting equivalent of conquering Everest - running a mile in under four minutes. This classic saga of human endurance is set around one of the greatest moments in sporting history.
