Abstract:

The six documents of this collection describe the Neolithic Dawenkou culture that inhabited the lower Yellow River valley between approximately 7000 BP and 5000 BP. Three of the documents are in English and three in Chinese. The English sources include Chang's broad work on Chinese prehistory, a source for contextualizing Dawenkou within the Chinese Neolithic era. The additional English documents are Underhill's statistical analysis of Dawenkou burial site data, and Kim's comparison of Dawenkou sites to literature on Melanesian prestige economies. Unlike the English sources, which are full text, the three Chinese sources are reproduced as digital images. Luan reviews 17 excavated Dawenkou sites and provides a general socio-cultural overview. The other two Chinese sources, Juxian Dazhujia Cun Dawenkou Wenhua Muzang and Zaozhuang Jianxin are detailed reports of Dawenkou sites.
