Abstract:

A dangerous mental patient, John Barrie, escapes from a high security hospital and turns up on Morse's patch. A master of disguise, Barrie sets up an elaborate and deadly battle of wits with the Chief Inspector as the Oxford police engage in a man hunt. Morse quickly realises that he is dealing with more than just a rapist on the run when signs of satanism appear in Oxfordshire. The only person who appears able to help Morse track down Barrie is his psychiatrist, Dr. Esther Martin. She also seems to be the person under threat from Barrie's freedom.
