I am the great grandson of the author of this book. I have loved the book since if first read it (aged 10) and can say that it has been an influence on me for most of my life.
The book is a fiction based around my great grand fathers travels as he circumnavigated the globe on the four-masted square-rigger the "Carradale".
I make no claims for his writing - it is not poor, but nor will he ever be hailed as a Hemmingway. The merit in this book lies mostly in its authenticity as a story told by someone who worked the square-riggers as they lost their dominance of the seas to the coal and oil fueled steamers.
The story mixes delight, wonder, fear and sadness as the author revisits his experiences aboard the ship.
I challenge any sea-lover to finish with a dry eye when they read the books dedication.
For anyone who reads this review, I can also offer that I have digital scans of James Harris' original logs written during his travels and of his exercise book from studying navigation in maritime college. The three together paint a truly wonderful veiw of life at the end of the clipper-ship era.
