Originals or contemporary copies, to his father and sister, mainly while on duty as a U.S. Army surgeon. From Fort Massachusetts, N.M., 1854-1856; from Paris, 1857; from various places, 1859-1869 (including Fort Davis, Texas, on the eve of the Civil War, and 1867-1869, from Fort Union, N.M.).

Describing Army post life (particularly in New Mexico), various Indian campaigns, friendship with Kit Carson and Ceran St. Vrain.

Also, letter from his wife, Emily, to her sister, Apr. 9, 1871, from Fort Union, describing the "Penitentes" rites.

With these: Typed transcripts from Missouri Historical Society of 3 letters, 1858-1860, from Peters to Jesse B. Turley, concerning publication of Kit Carson's biography.
