Abstract:

The black tower: Set on the black-shale cliffs of Dorset, location of the murder of Adam Dalgleish's godfather, a chaplain, precipitates a series of sinister events, and Dalgliesh must find the hidden pattern behind the tragedy to stop a nightmare of death.

Death of an expert witness: Dalgliesh investigates the murder of a forensic pathologist at a laboratory in a small village in East Anglia, against the backdrop of the desolate fens stretching out to the dark North Sea.

The skull beneat the skin: Cordelia Gray embarks on a mysterious mission to an island castle off the south coast of England, where backstage intrigue among members of an acting troup escalates into murder.
