Abstract:

Christmas Holiday : Deanna Durbin stars in this taut film noir from director Robert Siodmak (The Killers, Criss Cross) in a role unlike anything else she did in her entire movie career. Newly married to Southern aristocrat Robert Monette (Gene Kelly), Jackie Lamont (Deanna) soon finds her life spiralling out of control when he commits a murder, is arrested and gaoled. Tormented by her love for her husband, Jackie leaves town, changes her name and gets a job as a singer in a New Orleans bar. But Robert escapes from prison and with malice on his mind tracks her down.

I'll be Yours : Based on a play by Hungarian Ferenc Molnar ("Liliom" /"Carousel") and with a screenplay by the legendary writer/director Preston Sturges, Deanna appears as small town girl Louise Ginglebusher who is working as an usherette in a New York theatre. She makes friends with the waiter (William Bendix) at her local diner who in turn introduces her to a young lawyer, George Prescott (Tom Drake). At a swank party where she is to sing, she attracts the attention of a wealthy tycoon (Adolph Menjou). To avoid his advances she makes up a "white lie"--Claiming she's married to Prescott. This leads to many amusing complications before true love surfaces to save the day.

Can't Help Singing : The first and only Deanna Durbin movie to be filmed in Color by Technicolor is further noteworthy thanks to a beautiful score, his last, by the legendary Jerome Kern ("Showboat") with lyrics by E.Y. Harburg ("The Wizard of Oz"). It's Deanna Goes West! As Caroline Frost, the daughter of a wealthy East Coast senator (Ray Collins) she is determined to marry US Cavalry officer Robert Latham (David Bruce) against her father's wishes. When Latham is posted to California, Caroline is not far behind, hitching up her wagon and braving the wild, wild west - on the way encountering conmen, prospectors, bandits, Indians and a card shark (Robert Paige), who is destined to steal her heart away from the Cavalry.

Nice Girl? : As Jan 'Pinky' Dana, the blossoming daughter of high school principal Robert Benchley, she finds herself ardently courted by both sophisticate Franchot Tone and boy-next-door Robert Stack. A series of misunderstandings lead to Jane earning a "bad" and wholly unjustified reputation. Also joining in the fun is 1940 Best Supporting Actor Oscar® winner Walter Brennan ("The Westerner").
