Abstract:

1761, London. The famous magistrate John Fielding is one of several gathered at St James's Palace to be honoured with a knighthood. As the audience eagerly cranes for a glimpse of the new queen-- widely rumored to be the ugliest the country has ever seen-- a terrible accident occurs: nobleman George Goward tumbles down the great staircase to his death. Not one person saw him begin to fall, even those standing closest. The blind John Fielding was the only one to notice anything untoward. A whispered sentence, an exhalation of breath-- these are the only clues available to suggest that this was no accident. Apothecary John Rawlings, accompanying his friend Fielding to the ceremony, sets out to investigate.
