Abstract:
Linus Rintoul, a government vet, gradually realises that Mrs Egremont makes great demands on her friends, but his efforts to distance himself are only partially successful due to the fact that so many of her fellow dog-fanciers meet untimely ends. Mrs Egremont asks him to meet her at the neolithic flint mines known as Grimes Graves. He soon discovers that they are all too aptly named.
