Abstract:

A futuristic SF murder mystery. D.A. Payne is a boilerplate biotechnologist in a decaying future America besieged by a Soviet-dominated world. One day he comes home from work to find the corpse of a beautiful woman on the floor of his apartment. He exercises his constitutional right to investigate the crime himself, and his journey takes him in and out of the city's sex-and-dance discos and reunites him with an old lover who has stolen their child back from the government. When the investigation takes an unwelcome turn, Payne finds himself fleeing for his life, hoping for escape to the world's remaining free enclave, Australia.
