I am not a literary critic and am not qualified to offer a review, so please take what I have to say for a grain of salt. In the language of this book, I am just a “chicken”. The book held my interest as an autobiography and social commentary. The author came from a such completely different background and experience than me that I found it very surprising that I share many of her views. Though I confess to not knowing many artists, I suppose I held certain preconceptions that were softened, if not completely erased, by this book. The writing style reminds me of that of comedic novelist Carl Hiaasen. Contributing to this is that, like this book, many of his are set in South Florida and feature a fascinating array of unusual characters, often of unwholesome character….

Some of the themes, particularly in regard to the interactions with, and reactions to, certain men became a little repetitive and predictable. I do appreciate however that relating these experiences was indispensable to illustrating and advancing author’ central thesis that American society and politics have become excessively sexualized and corrupt. I was hoping to read the thoughts on the underlying reasons why this may have occurred and what might be done to remedy it and was disappointed the author decided not to get into that very much in this book. Though the author is richly blessed with attractive looks and artistic talent, I came away from the book feeling that she has also had more than she shares of bad luck. The book made clear that the victimization she has suffered was due in no small part to the blessings just mentioned, but even taking that into account the author has been exceptionally unlucky in my view. It is understandable that her experiences have made her cynical toward others but they have clearly strengthened her character. To her great credit the negative experiences she endured have not blotted out the positive ones and have not left her exhausted, unhopeful or bereft of idealism.
