Layout: Text written in two columns of 55 lines, surrounded by two gloss columns of varying number of lines. Text and gloss keyed alphabetically. Quires of 10 folios. Horizontal catchwords at lower margin center. Pecia marks at end of pecie for text and gloss throughout the manuscript. Text and gloss systematically corrected.
Script: rounded Italian textura (littera bononiensis). Text written by Petrus Picininus, according to the colophon on fol. 320v: "Et ego petrus piçininus p[er] gra[ti]am dei et beatissime virginis Marie [et] om[ni]um s[an]c[t]orum libru[m] istum [com]plevi [et] traxi ad fine[m]." Scribe is recorded for the date 1285 in Fillipini & Zucchini. Miniatori e pittori a Bologna : documenti dei secoli XIII e XIV, 1947, p. 199.
Decoration, primary: 39 1-column miniatures (fol. 1r, 75r, 93r, 109r, 116r, 117v, 120r, 122v, 128r, 130v, 133r, 136r, 145v, 154v, 158r, 160v, 164v, 175v, 178v, 181r, 182r, 184r, 185v, 192v, 212r, 222r, 225r, 231v, 238v, 242r, 243r, 246r, 247v, 255v, 259r, 286v, 287v, 294r, 295r); illuminated initials of 6 lines with ivy motifs in text below miniatures; 4-line illuminated initials throughout text and gloss at questiones; all initials with corner extenders.
Decoration, secondary: Rubrics in red. Two-line penwork initials in text and gloss, alternating red and blue, elaborately flourished in the contrasting color. Text initials placed in the margins; gloss initials set into columns of text. One-line capitals, paraphs, and running titles alternate red and blue.
Binding: 18th cent., with arms of Pius VI and the cardinal librarian Francesco S. de Zelada.
Origin: Written and penwork decoration executed in Bologna, probably between ca. 1285 and ca. 1300; illuminated in France, probably Paris, ca. 1300-ca. 1310.
