Abstract:

During the summer before the 1964 presidential election, the Republican Party nomination was split between the liberal Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York, the moderate Governor William Scranton of Pennsylvania, and the conservative Arizona senator Barry Goldwater. Goldwater arrived at the Republican National Convention with enough votes to win the nomination; however, his statements, which seemed to defend extremism, alienated many within his own party. Though Goldwater won the Republican nomination, he lost the presidential race to Lyndon B. Johnson.
