Abstract:

Denishawn, the revolutionary dance company founded by Ruth St. Denis and her husband Ted Shawn, spent the years between 1919 and 1931 touring extensively and creating some 300 pieces. By combining traditional ballet training with Isadora Duncan's free movement and adding elements of Far and Middle Eastern dances, along with popular symphonic music, St. Denis, Shawn, and the Denishawn company were the creators of the choreography from which American Modern dance evolved. Sadly, little of the rich body of work could be visually preserved at the time. This documentary presents the largest collection of re-created Denishawn dances to date, thus preserving these seminal works of the Mother and Father of American Modern Dance from oblivion. A brief introduction is given for each dance.
