Abstract:

Papers of the Derby and Peabody families, primarily diaries and other volumes of Martha (Coffin) Derby, Mary Jane (Derby) Peabody, and Ephraim Peabody. Martha (Coffin) Derby diaries, written as letters addressed to her family, were kept during trips to England, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, and Canada (1801-1804), as well as the Virgin Islands (1830-1831), and include poetry, memoranda, and extracts of letters. Papers of Mary Jane (Derby) Peabody include commonplace books (1818); travel diaries kept in Pennsylvania and Ohio (1831-1833); a diary of a trip to Washington, D.C., with sketches (1851); a journal kept by her and the children during her husband Ephraim Peabody's absence in Europe (1853); a diary of a trip with Ephraim to St. Augustine, Fla. for his health (1856); an account of his death (1856); diaries of trips to England, France, Switzerland, and Italy, with photographs and artwork pasted in (1867-1870); and an autobiography (1876-1879). Papers of Ephraim Peabody consist of a volume of manuscript poetry (1824-1850), including a poem on westward expansion in the U.S.; diaries kept while minister at King's Chapel, Boston, Mass. (1850-1854, 1855), including references to slavery, with some entries by Mary Jane Peabody; and diaries of a trip to England, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland, and Scotland (1853).

The collection also contains a log of the brig Three Sisters on a trading voyage from Salem, Mass. to Jakarta, Indonesia (1788-1789); correspondence from Martha (Coffin) Derby to Mary Jane (Derby) Peabody and Eleanor (Coffin) Derby (1831-1832); letters of condolence on the death of Ephraim Peabody; and disbound scrapbooks of poetry and obituaries of Henry W. Bellows, Orville Dewey, Henry W. Longfellow, and Ephraim Peabody. Additional papers related to Martha (Coffin) Derby include a partial typed transcript of her 1801-1802 diary by Robert P. Emlen and an unpublished typescript based on her diaries entitled "Lady with the Harp" by Martha Derby (Peabody) Scott.
