Professional papers of a prominent Australian anthropologist and author, documenting his career and intellectual life from 1940 to 2000. The papers include field notebooks, genealogical charts, research notes, and other writings related to his field studies of Samoa (1940-1943 and 1966-1968); abundant personal and professional correspondence; manuscript drafts of journal articles, books and popular writings; subject files; and notes on topics in anthropology. Also includes Freeman's extensive files documenting the Mead-Freeman controversy, especially the published literature and his rejoinders, his research and evidence. 2012 Addition to the papers include correspondence, writing, research and subject files, notebooks, diaries, photographs, and media.The second 2012 addition is comprised of Freeman's personal journals dated 1957-1958 and 1961-2001. This material is restricted until 2062. Also included in this accession are three VHS tapes and an oral history of Freeman done for the National Library of Australia.
