Abstract:

This book examines a variety of environmental design issues including machining of metals, separation of end-of-life plastics, economics, full cost accounting; and uncertainties in life cycle analysis. Materials discussed include: metals, plastics, foams, paint, textiles, mercury, and glass. Every stage in the development of an automobile is reviewed including research and development, design, manufacture, use and end-of-life disposal. Contents include: plastic material separat vehicle subsystems; disassembly modeling used to assess automotive recycling opportunities; recycling of automotive tail lamp assembly; preferred design for recycling practices for bumper fascia systems; TEIME: a tool for environmental impacts evaluation in product design; managing uncertainty in life cycle inventories; using life cycle management to evaluate lead-free electrocat; life cycle analysis of automotive glass: product and recycling; a life-cycle assessment study of automotive basecoats; life cycle considerations as decision making support in the automotive industry; measuring consumer response to evnrionmental pricing in the automotive industry; and hypercars: a market-oriented approach to meeting lifecycle environmental goals.
