I read Desolation Island by Patrick O’Brian. In this novel one of the things that O’Brien is trying to show the readers is what it means to be a true ship Captain. The novel discusses the hardships of going underway and leaving a family at home, but yet staying true to the crew and being a good Captain. This book is worth reading because it presents scenarios that will soon be applicable to our lives as Coast Guard Officers. For example, the novel introduces the concept of knowing your profession and being ready for anything that may happen on your ship. I related to this novel because I was constantly thinking to myself, what would I do if I were in his shoes? I thought to myself about different possibilities the ship Captain could have resolved problems with and how the issue might have ended up differently. This book challenged me to think ahead about my career as a Coast Guard Officer and not just think about getting through academics at the Academy. Desolation Island kind of brought me back to seeing the bigger picture of why I am at the Academy and that I am training to be a Coast Guard Officer.
