The author details his early years in Nazi Germany as the son of a well-to-do African and a white German nurse. His early years were spent in material comfort and affluence due to his diplomat grandfather. As Hitler rose to power, the author and his mother were treated as non-Aryans, dehumanized and devalued by the Nazis. Hans immigrated to the United States in the early 1950s.
